Zig Ziglar, in his book Secrets of Closing the Sale, wrote that "when a company or an individual compromises one time, whether it's on price or on principle, the next compromise is right around the corner and you can bet your last nickel on it." This holds true with standards. A compromised standard will no longer exist as a standard. It becomes an optional level of quality and a source of grief. The moral here is: when setting the project technical standards, use a generous sprinkling of common sense. Include everyone who will either have to live with or who will be affected by the recommendations in the creation, discussion, review, and decision process as the standards are being set. Then stick to the standards!
